Westport United put Celtic to the sword

image preview

With Mayo playing against the Sky Blues on Saturday night there was a somewhat congested Mayo League card on Sunday afternoon. Westport Utd recorded a facile 6-0 win at home to their former fierce rivals Castlebar Celtic on Sunday morning. Dave Hoban fired home four goals in a stunning display, as well as efforts by Phil Keegan and Darren Browne in a superb display by the Covies. Ballina Town were made work for their three points at home to Conn Rangers. A first half Brendan Lavelle strike ultimately proved the difference in a closely fought affair.

Castlebar Educate Together school plans to be open in time

The new Educate Together School in Castlebar, which is due to open on Tuesday September 1, will hopefully still open despite not having a home sorted out just 12 days before it's due to open, according to the group's regional development officer. The new Educate Together school for the town was announced in February of this year and would be the county's second such school after the opening of one in Ballina last year. The school had been given the old Burren National School outside the town as a home, but the building was deemed not up to the required standard by the Educate Together.

As a result of the torrential rain all weekend a number of games were pulled for the safety of the players. However, those that did go ahead threw up some cracking ties amid the shocking conditions. In the Elverys Sports Super League, Castlebar Celtic had gone into an early lead thanks to a Jordan Loftus goal after only 20 seconds, but with the rain getting heavier and the surface water in Celtic Park causing problems, referee Jimmy Cawley called both sets of players aside and abandoned the game after only nine minutes. Westport Utd were pushed all the way by Iorrais Aontaithe on Saturday night in what can only be described as a thriller. And the star of the show most definitely was Phil Keegan who bagged a hat-trick in a stunning display. Deadlocked at 2-2 at the break the Covies found something extra after the break with Keegan grabbing the late winner. Dave Cameron also got in on the act for Westport, with Ivan Barrett (two) and Kyle O’Reilly on target for Iorrais Aontaithe.

All tight at the top early on

In the Welcome Inn Premier A there are three sides locked together at the top of the table with Glenhest Rovers, Westport United B, and Killala all level on six points after two wins from two for the three sides. Glenhest Rovers followed up their 7-0 win over Moy Villa in round one with a 1-0 win over Swinford last weekend on the road, with Paul McLoughlin scoring the goal. This weekend they face a Kiltimagh/Knock United side who have neither won nor lost a game this season, drawing in both their outings against Claremorris and Castlebar Celtic B. Westport United B will take on Castlebar Celtic B on Sunday as they look to keep their 100 per cent record up. Last Saturday night they had a 3-0 win over Partry Athletic with Mark McNally, Paul Geraghty, and Jordan Ring finding the net. The other side with six points so far, Killala, will take on Swinford on Sunday, last time out Killala had a 3-1 win over Moy Villa who have found it hard to adjust to the life after the Super League so far this season, losing both their opening two games.
